Two Watches, One Team

Add twenty strangers to a confined space, separate them into two groups, stir in some heat, fatigue, frustration and watch the pot boil.

Starboard, Port, Bow, Cockpit, Helm, Engineer, Bosun, Sail Repair, Mother. All of these terms are common sailing terminology, but they can also be defined as areas of work for a sailing crew. Add in some additional terms such as Heads, Bilges, Anti-Bac (cleaning common points of contact) and you have a good idea of what work crews are performing.

These terms though also appear to be lines of division and fracture points for team harmony. It's easy to assume or perceive that each role has a defined crew member and intruders are not allowed, but this is a false perception. Some people are better skilled and more naturally perform certain roles but this should not perturb or frustrate the opportunity for others to learn.

Any new team will face the challenges that we are facing in coming together. This is normal. This is how we grow. In sailing and in life, sometimes we need to be reminded that we are one team.

We are Dare To Lead.

On a lighter and slightly disturbing note, the Mother Watch appears to be looking for donations to their nominated charities while at sea. Just think of plumbers and coin slots and you'll get the idea.

On a personal note, love to all the family and friends at home. Happy Birthday to everyone that has had or is having a birthday while I'm at sea. I'd be more specific but I'm rather forgetful of birthdays and rely on my calendar when on land.
