A rare opportunity for a China-based Communications Officer to join the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race team.

Clipper Race HQ is based in the United Kingdom, however with three confirmed Chinese Host Port and Team Partners in the next race edition, China is a key region for the Clipper Race so we are expanding our current team to include a Mandarin speaking colleague.

The successful candidate will work remotely with the UK team, meaning they must be a motivated self-starter with the ability to work using their initiative and be fully committed to working cohesively with their UK based colleagues.

Candidates must be fluent in English and Mandarin, both in written and spoken form. Knowledge and experience of sailing is desirable but not essential; however, a thirst for adventure and the ability to learn the job quickly and identify and pitch stories in a timely fashion is vital. Experience of placing lifestyle, sports and/or business stories is an advantage and the ability to proof and write creative and engaging copy is paramount.

Not your average communications job, this role can be an endurance test in its own right yet offers an incredibly highly rewarding and supportive experience for the right person. Applicants should be prepared to work abroad for various race stopovers in the lead up to and during the Clipper 2019-20 Race. In addition, regular weekend and out of hours communications support is required during the race year due to the 24/7 nature of the race when it’s at sea.

This role may involve travelling away for extended periods and involves extensive weekend and out of hours working during the race year.


Reporting to the Head of Global Communications, duties include but are not limited to the following key roles and responsibilities:

-Press and public relations, concentrating on Chinese and wider Asia coverage in broadcast, online, print outlets and Chinese social channels.

-Managing communications for the Clipper Race’s three Chinese Host Port and Team Partner accounts

-Management of Clipper Race news and updates on the race’s Chinese social media platforms via WeChat and Weibo

-Internal communications, including informing the wider UK Clipper Race team aware of key announcements, dates, and appointments in China

-Translating and adapting relevant press releases and news stories from the UK team into Mandarin for website and distribution to Chinese media

-Assisting the UK team in writing and proofing Daily Race Updates whilst the race year is in action


The successful candidates will:

-have a minimum five years’ experience within a relevant PR or Communications department;

-possess excellent Mandarin and English writing and proofing skills, including press releases, website and drafting social copy;

-own and develop relationships with Chinese regional and international media across news, lifestyle, sport, sailing, business and key specialist industries for partners, and maintain regular and positive contact;

-be experienced in following and supporting crisis communications plans;

- experience working with translations, particularly in high pressure situations, and have ability to manage and oversee translations for both media and Race Partners;


-have a hot grasp of digital and social media channels, including Chinese social media, and be confident in advising how best to use them to increase audience engagement and create value for race partners, and the race’s recruitment team;

-have a passion for breaking into new media markets and developing new relationships;

-possess excellent video editing skills and at least three years’ experience in using professional level editing software, and have a proven track record of being able to meet short video production deadlines;


-be a first-rate team player with a natural passion for people and storytelling;

-be able to prove how they have added value and influenced campaigns for previous clients within a sports, news and lifestyle audiences;

-have a lifestyle which supports extended international travel up to six weeks at a time, as well as unsociable, often unpredictable work hours;

-be prepared to grow and progress in a challenging yet highly rewarding small team environment;
