Switzerland nominated for SUI Sailing Awards

28 October 2014

As part of the SUI Sailing Awards, Clipper 2013-14 Race entry Switzerland has been nominated for Best Sailing Project.

The initiative is up for the award for being ‘unusual’ and ‘courageous’ for inviting a landlocked country to take part in the world’s longest ocean race.

The Team Switzerland project is also praised for helping spread the word about how addictive sailing is round the world, as well as raising vital funds for hospital ship charity Mercy Ships at the same time.

Vincent Hagin, president of Swiss Sailing said: “We believe Switzerland has been an outstanding ambassador for the country and its values like persistence, performance and perfection were taken very seriously.

“With this nomination we would like to express our appreciation to having been part of the Clipper 2013-14 Race, in recognition of the efforts of Skipper Vicky Ellis and her crew.”

The awards will take place on 22 November at the Maison du Sport à Ittigen in Berne, Switzerland.

Switzerland finished fifth overall in the Clipper 2013-14 Race, with podiums in Brisbane, Australia, Jamaica and Den Helder, The Netherlands.

The team raised US$45,000 for Mercy Ships with its fundraising efforts round the world.
