So much more than just a race.

As we turn to race up the English Channel and enter the final stretch of this race, there’s a moment to reflect on the journey.

For me, it’s a journey that started in 2017 when, after attending a Clipper Race presentation, I signed up for the Clipper 2019-20 race.

I’ve had many unforgettable experiences during the last 7 years (thanks to Clipper Race and the fabulous team that made this happen), as well as getting to know fellow racers over my training and Leg 8.

But five Prime Ministers and one global pandemic later (hence my deferred race), I’ve finally got to participate and race on Dare To Lead.

I’d started the race without expectations - other than this would be a physically and mentally challenging experience (in that respect, it didn’t disappoint!). Consequently, there have been many elements to have made this an unforgettable experience; I’ve loved the comradeship and support on Dare To Lead, living life at 45 degrees, and seeing the night sky like never before.

Our Host Ports were major events too - thanks to Washington, DC and Oban, where we were warmly welcomed and celebrated throughout our stay.

And so onto Portsmouth (and Gosport) - which at times has felt like my second home, and given the wonderful celebrations for the Clipper 2023-24 Race Start, I’m sure this will be a magnificent and emotional finish.

On a final point…my thanks and love to my wife, Katie, for her support and encouragement over the years. We have a shared approach to life of ‘no regrets’…if yours is similar…then stop reading and go for it!
