Rainbow Crossing

Steel grey seas, stone grey skies, a grey horizon sliding by,

Frequently drenched, often chilled, always tired am I,

On a gruelling graveyard watch

I can't help asking why

With sapphire seas, kaleidoscope skies and silver moon shards slivering by,

And commuting albatross teaching Top Gun how to fly,

On a cloudless daybreak watch,

I know the reason why

With whispering breaths, an Antarctic breeze impregnating canvas sails,

Increasing expectations of Roaring Forty gales,

On a crisp morning watch,

I know the reason why

With Rastafarian sail-ties at the stern providing goodwill bunting,

Welcoming southern swells and their persuasive boat shunting,

On a colourful afternoon watch,

I know the reason why

With shared endurance and knowledge gained on this unforgiving sea,

Follows a more tolerant, more patient, an altogether better me,

On a reflective sunset watch,

I know the reason why

And the reason why?

On the Race Of Your Life,

On this transatlantic ocean roam,

The appreciation that what's most important in your life,

Are your loved ones at home.
