Apologies to all our followers for the absence of yesterday's crew blog. Quite a number of us have been struck down with seasickness and those who remain relatively well are helping to cover all the tasks.
Seasickness can be a horribly debilitating condition. It manifests as nausea at best to vomiting and an inability to keep any food or drink down, and an overwhelming feeling of lethargy to the point where it is almost impossible to summon up the energy to do anything.
I would say most of the crew have suffered to some extent and for those who are badly affected lying down offers the best remedy. The condition usually only lasts a matter of days and I am pleased to say that many of the crew report that they are now starting to feel better.
The sea conditions are different to those in Race 1. Although it is not particularly cold, foul weather gear is the dress code of choice, as we have experienced large waves breaking over the bow utterly saturating those in their way. As tempting as it is to laugh at this, caution should be urged as it is almost certainly the case that at some point it will happen to you - I speak from experience!
So despite the fact that fit crew numbers have been depleted somewhat, at the time of writing and according to the latest schedule, Derry~Londonderry~Doire lies in first place - early days admittedly, but as we were so close to a podium finish last time we remain determined to improve on that and who knows what we can achieve when we are all back to normal - whatever that is.
