As you may imagine and probably surmised by reading these blogs, it takes a lot to race these boats across the ocean. It takes courage, discipline, tenacity, hard work, and empathy for fellow teammates. We are fortunate to have a great skipper and first mate, who have empowered us to be the best we can be. What sometimes is understated is that it also takes a fantastic crew to run these boats, and on Seattle we have an amazing group of people. I would like to take some time to introduce you to my watch -- the group of people that I spend the most time with and have made this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Adele - The Speed Queen
She is from Cambridge and her favourite (still getting used to British spelling) song is Born to Run by the Boss (aka Bruce Springsteen). Adele is extremely patient and has great enthusiasm. She loves to go fast and drive at top speeds. When she isn't on the helm, you can find her with me seeking shade from the sun.
Alex - Miss 50 Questions
She hails from Yorkshire and her favourite song is Raspberry Beret by Prince. An inquisitive human being, she loves to learn and is always aware of others' feelings. You can find her in a new place on the boat, learning how every detail works. She is close by to have a chat on the days that you are feeling most down.
Melanie - Humble Bragger
Born in Essex, she always brings a great energy to the boat - which is extremely welcomed on these slow, Doldrum days. Her favourite song is Love and Happiness by Al Green. She is becoming a rockstar helmer with a rockstar personality.
Jane - No Filter
Although she was born in Dale, Jane has spent most of her life in Australia. An avid Pink Floyd fan, her favourite song is Wish You Were Here. She is a great sailor and an even better mentor, instilling confidence in all who she guides. One of her defining traits is a filthy sense of humour with no boundaries. You can find her near the stern on a chair that I made out of Dynamo, laughing at her jokes.
Marcus - The Professor
He was born in LA. His favourite song is Pirate Looks at Forty by Jimmy Buffet. A substitute teacher in Seattle, Marcus can translate any complicated topic into plain English. He is our trusted mechanic and easily the most organized person on this boat. He disagrees with the organized part, but compared to the rest of us, he is extremely organized.
Bernine - The Machine
She is from Hemel Hempstead and her favourite song is Dance Monkey. She doesn't give up easily, especially when the wind is blowing hard. She is extremely determined and detailed oriented. You can usually find her in the cockpit.
Alec - The Storyteller
Finally, there is our watch leader. Alec, who is from Wales, loves the song All the Mad Men by David Bowie. He is our fearless watch leader, ready to impart wisdom and tell a couple stories along the way. If you can't find him, he is definitely on the bow because the only thing he loves more than being our leader is setting up tack lines.
Without the people on this watch, I would have a completely different experience. They have made every day fly by and I couldn't ask for a better group of people to have with me on this journey.
Thanks y'all!
Gregorio (aka Georgi)
