In my last blog, I wrote about my watch and how amazing each person is. I spend almost every waking second with them: we eat together, hoist sails, and sleep at the same time. However, it takes two watches to run this boat 24/7. I have very limited interactions with the other watch, but I do have the entertaining pleasure of waking them up. Here is how I wake each one of them up. I have tailored my approach to each individual.

Tim - He and I are the cooks together every 6 days, so he is probably the person from the other watch that I spend the most time with. On particularly light days (like yesterday), I like to put the fan (on the highest setting) really lose to his face, lift his bed up, and yell broach! He wakes up with quite a jolt, which is critical since he is known to fall back asleep after being awoken.

Queenie - She is a super deep sleep and also happens to sleep on the bottom centre bunk. I usually just bend over and give her a couple nice and loud "QUEENIE"s. She usually rolls straight out of bed.

Jane - Jane sleeps with a wall of sarongs blocking her from the outside world. I whisper her name a couple of times until I see movement behind the sarongs. Then I keep saying her name until we make eye contact. It reminds me of those older movies scenes when a character has to wake up a vampire from his/her coffin. The character whispers and knocks outside of the coffin until the vampire walks out.

Lauren - I usually have to give the mattress a couple of shakes before I see her moving around. Once she is moving I know she will slowly make her way to get ready.

Mauricio - I usually wake my father up by gently tapping or squeezing his arm. Unfortunately, he and Marcus (who is on my watch) sometimes switch bunks. There have been a couple of times that Marcus has woken up because I am squeezing his arm saying hello in Spanish. It was pretty awkward the first couple of times, but now he just plays along with it.

Dawn - Dawn sleeps right under my father so she usually wakes up when she hears me as I say good morning to my dad in Spanish. However, if she isn't awake a couple of "Hey Dawn!" will get her up. She likes to lay in bed for a bit and loves her tea, so I usually try to get the kettle boiling right after my "hey Dawn" shout.
