Race 13 - Day 5
Crew Diary - WTC on the move
23 June
Bermuda was a wonderful and welcome stopover with intoxicating beaches, golden rum drinks and friendly locals. The Parade of Sail was impressive and seeing Malama, with her impressive foils, and Argo, with her canting mast, in Bermuda so soon after leaving Newport was an inspiration – speed is the name of the game.
Having left Bermuda behind and after a well organised Le Mans Start, we enjoyed unexpected winds until the inevitable wind hole devoured most of the fleet. Bermuda particularly appeared to suffer a contorted trail in their quest for any zephyr. After a day of frustration WTC Logistics found her legs yesterday and last night and enjoyed an average of 12 knots during the night. We have now passed through the Gulf Stream and have a scant 140 miles to the finish. Squalls and some downpours have left us wet but exhilarated.
Now to the topic of bread. Yesterday’s baking left a little to be desired. Aptly nicknamed Brain Bread we determined that it must have been the work of a dentist in search of new clients! So what to do with the remaining loaf and a half? With dolphins around WTC Logistics we were reluctant to toss them over the side for fear of braining some poor unsuspecting mammal. Paul determined that, indeed, the loaves might constitute a shipping hazard if they were able to float! Eventually, the intrepid baker was invited to a ceremonial toss which was duly caught on video to the delight of all. Today’s loaves, baked by Sophie, were perfect and we are all grateful for the improvement.
This is my first blog and I want to comment on our crew. This group of folks are a real team, working together under the leadership of Dan and Ineke. It is a pleasure to be a part of WTC Logistics as we look for another podium position in the final three races to London.
