If the conditions we endured during the first four days of the South China Sea are a resemblance of what's coming in the cross of the North Pacific Ocean, then we are in for a fun but difficult leg. After an exciting Le Mans start a few miles out of Zhuhai, we began in an upwind direction with wind speeds between 25 and 40 knots. This combination made the boat tilted at 45 degrees and very bumpy, which in turn made simple things such as getting into your bunk or even brushing your teeth very complex.
The first night I personally had a very frustrating experience when it took me 35 minutes juggling and sweating to set up and get into my bunk. It was a reminder that many things are out of my control and that those that are in my control need to get done well and efficiently the first time around.
Sebastian and I are the newest members of the group. It has been nice to encounter a team with high spirits and hungry to do better. There's a general effort, a culture of doing things right for a general purpose and not just for the individual. There is confidence in our Skipper and AQP and we are all trying our best to sail the boat safely and fast. We want to be on the podium.
