Back to archiveOne of the UK’s longest running events, the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week plays a key part in the British sporting summer calendar and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.
This week, two of the brand new fleet of Clipper 70s will compete for the first time in this renowned regatta, following the recent completion of their first circumnavigation during the Clipper 2013-14 Race.
Competing under Clipper Events in the IRC Class Zero, OneDLL and Henri Lloyd will be battling it out once again to win the brand new coveted trophy, The Edmund Whelan Celebration Trophy in memory of Barrister yachtsman, former RYA Deputy Secretary General and legal affairs manager Edmund Whelan, an internationally influential figure in UK sailing who died recently after a short fight with cancer.
The Clipper 70s have been put through their paces in the recent 40,000-mile Clipper Race smashing previous fleet records and will be a fierce contender against their rivals.
To celebrate the boats participation in the prestigious race, On Thursday 7 August open boat tours will be available from 10:00am to 16:00pm at the Cowes Yacht Haven. Since 1826 when only seven teams competed for a gold cup, Cowes Week has evolved. Each day on the Solent there are up to 40 races with more than 1,000 competitors ranging from Olympians to weekend sailors with spectacular crowds of spectators lining the shores to be at the heart of the action. On Friday 8 August at 21:30pm the famous Cowes Week fireworks are a spectacle not to be missed, as spectators and racers alike celebrate the action packed week of sailing.
