Skipper of Derry~Londonderry~Doire Sean McCarter has been voted sailor of the month by the Irish sailing website Afloat.ie.

Sean received the coveted title after his recent series of successive wins, which included winning the Clipper 70s class in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in Race 6. Not content with his victory Sean and his team followed up on the win by claiming second place in Race 7, from Hobart Tasmania to Brisbane, Australia.

Currently in the midst of one of the toughest races so far in the 16 race series, the 4,500 mile race from Brisbane to Singapore, Sean was thrilled to receive the news of his new title:

“It’s a huge honour to be named sailor of the month by Afloat.ie. I spent my youth in Donegal learning to sail, and now here I am sailing around the world leading a team of amateurs, who have slowly but surely proven themselves to be excellent sailors.

“We’re thrilled with the results so far and I hope we can continue to make everyone back home extremely proud. Watch this space…”

Sean who was born in County Donegal, Ireland first got a taste for sailing after joining the Swilly Yacht Club honing his sailing skills from a very early age.

During Race 8 to Singapore Derry~Londonderry~Doire has consistently been in the top three of the leaderboard. With Race 8 still far from decided only time will tell if the Northern Irish entry will be able to secure its third successive podium position.
