Teams arrive in Singapore for Old Pulteney Navigator Cup

GREAT Britain, OneDLL and Old Pulteney have arrived into Singapore's One15 Marina, Sentosa Bay, today after completing Race 8 from Brisbane.

GREAT Britain and OneDLL celebrated finishing in second and third places respectively on arrival in Singapore today, while victors of Race 8, Henri Lloyd will arrive tomorrow (Thursday 13 Feb) along with the rest of the Clipper Race fleet.

Simon Talbot, skipper of GREAT Britain, celebrated his team’s podium position and explained:  “Our race didn’t start well. We were trailing the fleet for the first few days but we dug deep, focused on the result and worked incredibly hard as a team to claw the positions back. By the end we were so close to first place but we couldn’t quite take it. Congratulations to Henri Lloyd, it was such an incredibly close finish to such an incredibly tough and challenging race.”

OneDLL skipper Olly Cotterell said:  “It was a difficult race. We had headwinds when we should have had favourable winds and there were a lot of changes at the front. We actually lead for a long time and we were a bit unlucky towards the end with the wind hole that developed but overall I am very proud of the team. We always set out trying to achieve a podium so when we get it, it is an amazing feeling.”

Old Pulteney skipper Patrick van der Zijden said: “The winds were facing us head on for much of the race and we were in first place for a long time before the winds then changed and we were stuck in a wind hole, which allowed the teams behind us to go around us. It was very nice to hear the now familiar sounds of the bagpipes playing us in today, and our traditional whiskey welcome always makes us feel at home and gives us all a good excuse to toast another great team effort.”

The finishing order for Race 8A (the shortened course from Brisbane to Sarangani Gate) is the final provisional result for Race 8 as set out below.

Originally the plan was to restart the race in the South China Sea, recording the time as individual boats crossed the start coordinates until they reached the finish line, and then add that to their Race 8A time, with the shortest total elapsed time winning. But because there was no Race 8B then elapsed time does not play a part in calculating the final results as there is no need to add the two times together.

Stopping to refuel in Borneo has meant that the teams’ arrival order into Singapore is different to their places in Race 8.

The crew and skipper of Henri Lloyd will be presented with the Old Pulteney Navigator Cup at the official Race 8 Prizegiving on Sunday 16 February.
