6 -15 January: Join us at the London Boat Show!
05 January 2017
Looking for the ultimate experience for 2017?
Join us at the London Boat Show, ExCeL Centre, starting this week and running between January 6 – 15, and meet our intrepid crew at our big red dome, stand G083, to learn more about how you could become the next generation of Clipper Race crew.
Regarded as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, less people have circumnavigated the globe than have climbed Mount Everest and crew members from all walks of life step on board to experience Mother Nature in all her glory in some of the world’s most remote locations.
Sharing his race adventure at the show is Nigel Odling, a 59 year-old British Pension Consultant, who took part in the first three legs of the 2015-16 race. He says:
“On Day 6 of Leg 1 the sun was shining, we had about 20-25 knots with the spinnaker up and I had long spells on the helm. The comment I wrote in my diary was "this is what I came for!" A highlight for me was coming into Cape Town at dawn with Table Mountain looking spectacular in the early morning sun, blowing 40 knots to complete a fast race from Rio.
“My inspiration to others is for people to go and do something memorable that is well outside their comfort zone, to push themselves.”
Nigel will be joined by crew from the last two race editions, including fellow Clipper 2015-16 Race Leg 1 and 7 (US Coast to Coast) competitor Jenny Day. A Lecturer in her daily life, Jenny’s says: “The Clipper Race was an amazing challenge, with amazing people and amazing memories. It opened my eyes to the endless possibilities there are in a world where I felt like I was on a constant treadmill. I realised the importance to stop, reflect on where you are and where you want to be.”
More than 550 crew members spanning 39 different nationalities have already signed up for 2017-18 edition of the race. The race is now more than 80 per cent full, but there are still places left on the full circumnavigation, and most legs.
Previous sailing experience is not necessary as full training will be provided, but you do have to be aged 18 or above by the time the race starts, and have a thirst for adventure. You can sign up for one or more legs or the full round the world race which takes eleven months to complete.
