Australian ocean adventurers wanted
30 July 2015
Fifty Australian crew will compete in the world’s longest ocean race this year, and we are now searching for the next generation of Antipodean ocean racers looking to take on the Race of their Lives in 2017-18.
Applications for the Clipper 2017-18 Race are open and training dates have been set at the Sydney base. If you would like to find out more about the Clipper Race and how to make your ocean racing dream a reality, Kirsty Whyte, circumnavigator in the Clipper 2009-10 Race, will be holding information sessions around Australia in the coming months.
The ocean odyssey is open to novice sailors from all walks of life, regardless of previous sailing experience. This year, there will be sailors from all Australian states, and from many occupations including farming, nursing, marketing, engineering and law.
With less than 30 days until the start of the Clipper 2015-16 Race, the 690 crew set to take part in the tenth edition of the Clipper Race are completing their final preparations.
Sailing round the world in this edition is crew member Jimmy Gannon from Sydney. Jimmy first heard about the race on his way home from work at North Sydney Train Station. The "Sail around the world, no experience required" billboard sold the adventure to him before he got on the train.
He says: “I was stuck in a bit of a rut with work and life in general and felt that I needed something to pull me out of my mundane and repetitive lifestyle. I decided sailing around the world would be the perfect way to bring some excitement back in to my life, and would be a great chance to make new friends and learn many new skills in the process.”
This edition, the all-Australian Leg 4 stops in Albany, Western Australia, Sydney, Hobart (taking in the famous Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race) and Airlie Beach, Queensland.
