Harnessing the wind
15 June 2020
Hyde Sails has powered the Clipper Race fleet for over a decade and on Global Wind Day we are celebrating with some of our favourite images of the sailmaker's craftmanship at work in the Clipper 2019-20 Race.
During the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race circumnavigation, bespoke Hyde Sails have to harness tough wind speeds. On the latest edition, Zhuhai recorded a wind speed of 80 knots whilst sailing from Cape Town to Fremantle.
The sails also have to handle over 40,000nm of racing and cope with all conditions from sailing in the tropics to the North Pacific, and are made for both endurance and performance. Each Clipper 70 carries a wardrobe of 11 Hyde sails including a main sail, foresails, spinnakers and storm sails to take on the challenge of long distance ocean racing.
