What a frustrating last 48 hours we have had since our last blog. We have had virtually every challenging type of weather - either blowing like mad or flat, sloppy, oily calm.
We have had rain and massive thunderstorms, more fog, and I am now looking up at a stunning moon in the midst of a crystal-clear night sky.
The challenge for yacht racers is the transition between each of these weather conditions. Unlike in most parts of the world, where the weather changes relatively slowly, here we have dramatic changes in a matter of minutes.
We have been rather unlucky managing these transitions, being slow to implement the new sail plan, or being pre-emptive and guessing wrongly what would be needed, leading to delays and sadly race places lost. Nevertheless, the crew remain incredibly upbeat.
They are concentrating hard on helming. They are dashing about willingly to the many exhausting sail change requests, and the debate on the merits of maple syrup - a staple for our many Canadians - and golden syrup, that old British favourite, rages unabated.
I don't think this will be a particularly speedy crossing, as we are currently completely becalmed. So, with over 3,000 miles to go and several more transitions to come, there will be plenty of opportunity to make up ground.
On on!!
