Another day with strange light winds contrary to the expected weather files, then off to wacky races as soon as it gets dark.

We are very mindful of those behind nibbling away at our lead.

The better wind seems to be further south but we’re having real trouble keeping the boat pointed in that direction as its going light again after a good eight hour run.

Round the world crew member Drake Forney and Leg 1 crew member Gareth Edey were mothers today and the sight of two young men in the galley discussing cake making (chocolate and black cherry - very good) made some slightly older crew members giggle.

Today we learned about the difference between Texas BBQ and New Orleans BBQ (no guessing the winner there); we saw some whales in the distance; and the boat was visited by a flying fish which our resident vegetarian (Leg 1 crew member Ralf Gommers) found and threw back before our carnivores (everyone else) could eat it, possibly with some olive oil and chilli flakes - a narrow escape.

I'm feeling more motivated this morning - 4am - and the jobs list for the crew grows. It’s going to be a busy day, only a strong wind can save them from a multitude of jobs and cake making.
