I feel as though I am beginning to hit a journalistic block, except more of a blog block. Funny because as I write this on Dan and I’s blog master document, which entails every blog we have written since race start, I have noticed it is now longer in word count than my University dissertation was…
When I threw it out to the team what to write about, a myriad of preposterous topics came to the fore. The only topic worthy of sharing (competing with the riveting suggestions of on-deck attire or the taste of reconstituted peas) was today’s snack-gate when several crew members retaliated against the prevalence of the snacks purchased in China within the snack cupboard. Snack-gate involved all of the said biscuits (which were horrendous, think of an Aldi off-brand digestive which one allowed to stale in our big mouldy cubbies since we left Gosport) being hidden in the depths of UNICEF for what the rebel crew members termed the ‘end times.’
Snack Gate became more than a backbencher's rebellion during happy hour when the issue was addressed by our onboard Minister of Food. As the crew remained silent on the issue, the responsibility fell on me, in a manner likened to John Bercow during a Brexit debate, to alert flamingo Sue to the undercurrent that was established throughout the afternoon. All I’ll say is, that Charlie and Adams being on Galley together today, I am sure has no correlation with the rebellion...The conclusion was diplomatically reached by Sistaah Kate firmly stating until the orange box was returned, no new snacks would appear. It is terribly entertaining what occurs in our micro world here and I think many enjoy the occasional misbehavior that they have been subjected to by their own kids pre-Clipper Race. Beyond that, sailing has been lovely, downwind, building in strength with a friendly following sea state. We have seen whales and dolphins and a variety of music has been flowing with many cracking stories and debates being shared in the cockpit. It feels as though after our somewhat tumultuous start with heavy winds and a bumpy sea state, the enjoyable sunshine social sailing of Leg 7 has commenced, and this crew is setting up to be a particularly entertaining bunch as we all plunge deeper into the lack of decorous and arguably normal social behaviour.
