This last 1000nm of the North Atlantic is proving to be quite a tough cookie, and I’d say that’s putting it lightly. Well, lucky for you we have gone into Stealth Mode to give you a 24-hour break from worrying that we’re still not pointing towards Oban.
But being in Stealth Mode I think gives me a free pass on talking tactics, explaining our reasoning for being where we are and what we hope for the future. So instead of that I will talk everything else.
Whilst the sailing has been rubbish on the nav screen, physically it’s been lovely easy going stuff. The crew, as always, is working hard, getting as much speed out of the boat whilst trying to keep a semi decent course. But with the conditions we’ve faced there hasn’t been many evolutions to expel energy, and for that reason the energy has been directed into other activities.
A particular favourite at the moment is baking. At one point we had four bread loaves, a batch of cookies and a cake all baked in one day. Julie is currently holding the title of best loaf, with a very impressive bread that even a French baker would be impressed with. Ella is in a strong second with a lovely focaccia that she meticulously folded every half an hour.
Another spell of energy headed by Andy has been to create a quiz for Ella and myself. Without the easy presence of Google, Andy went around every crew member who had to enter a random question from their brain. To give you an insight, question one goes as follows; how many bricks do you need to build one square meter of brick wall in the UK (half brick thick)?Apparently, we have until the morning to complete.
Final news, we have had some amazing wildlife recently. Definitely the best of the whole circumnavigation. We’ve seen sperm whales up close as they’ve lifted their heads out of the water to get a better look at us. A pack of Orcas playing around not 100m from the boat and, as always, we are often in the company of dolphins.
That is about all from me, I have a quiz to complete.
All the best Hannah, Ella and the Washington, DC Crew.
