Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show starts today
07 April 2016
Not your average adventure, the Clipper Race will be at the 2016 Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show today until Sunday 10 April at Craneway Pavilion, San Francisco. Join us at stand I6 and hear first-hand how you can race around the world from those who have, our intrepid crew.
"If you'd told me four years ago I'd be where I am today, I would never have believed you,” says San Francisco resident and 2013-14 race edition crew member, Elaina Breen, who took part in Leg 2 and 7.
Elaina is at the show sharing her race experience alongside fellow crew members and the Clipper Race Recruitment Team. Learning to sail was on Elaina’s adventure wish list and her decision to start sailing coincided with the arrival of the Clipper 2011-12 Race fleet arriving into the city under its iconic Golden Gate Bridge.
"I hope I can be a role model for all ages that lack of experience should never stifle our passion or determination to push beyond perceived limits,” adds Elaina, the oldest woman to have participated in the race.
Clipper Race speakers:
Thursday 7 April, 4.45pm: Local race crew talk about their experiences of this ultimate endurance challenge around the world.
Sunday 10 April, 3.30pm: Join local race crew to hear how they conquered the world’s oceans.
Joining Elaina at the show, Clipper 2011-12 Race crew member and San Francisco resident, Lisa Perkin says: “I didn't want to wake up one day and realise I had not truly lived my life! I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to raise the bar to what I had accomplished thus far...I had already taken part in endurance activities - marathons and triathlons but I wanted something more. I saw the boats back in 2010 and met some of the crew who had just crossed the Pacific and I was inspired! I immediately wanted to do at least one leg of the next race! I figured I enjoyed challenges and I had decided I wanted another experience full of adventure...”
Lisa took part in three of the eight race legs around the world, including across the North Pacific from Qingdao in China to her home city. “I remember feeling elated and accomplished coming under the Golden Gate Bridge. I had just crossed the Pacific! More than 6000 nautical miles in 29 days! It had been a fast crossing and we had placed third on the podium and that added to my excitement!” she added.
