Level 2: Living at sea

6 days on the water including sea survival course

It’s time to build on the skills you learnt in Level 1, including drills like man overboard. Here’s where you’ll go from surviving to thriving.

Four on, four off

Now you can sail safely, you’ll be expected to pull your weight on board – which means getting to grips with the watch system, required for round-the-clock sailing.

Life at 40º

You’ll learn to cook, clean and sleep whatever the weather. It sounds intense, but you’ll quickly feel at home operating at extreme angles in even the roughest swells.

Trim, trim, trim

Your sails are your engines above deck – so here’s where you’ll learn to get the most from them in different wind conditions.

The individual approach

Throughout the course, you’ll continue to receive feedback to improve your skills and ensure you’re learning safely.

Race Crew inside the tight quarters of a sailboat. One crew member climbs down a ladder from an open hatch above, while two others organize equipment in the bunk area. Blue storage bags and gear are secured on either side of the narrow space, highlighting the cramped and functional setup needed for an ocean race.Link arrow

The Life

A Clipper 70 is no place for the faint-hearted. Every team member has a role on deck and is trained to form a self-sufficient unit, ready to handle any situation, no matter how severe.

FAQs

From training duration to fitness requirements, find the answers you need below.

The first day of Level 2 you will do the RYA Sea Survival course and then you will move onto your training yacht. During this second week of training, you have a chance to review everything you learned on Level 1 and concentrate on areas that you haven’t got to grips with yet. The main difference of this week is that you’ll stay out on the water, sailing the yacht overnight – so you’ll be in a watch system and getting a real feel of what life on board will be like. Even the daily routine of getting dressed, eating, going to the toilet becomes much more demanding when you are living life at an angle on a permanently moving platform!
