Under a dramatic sky and within the stunning scenic backdrop around Ardmucknish Bay, the eleven strong Clipper Race fleet hoisted sails and prepared its approach to the final Race Start of the circumnavigation. The forecasted 12-14 knot southwesterly wind, initially gusting up to 20 knots, led some of the teams to choose to reef down the mainsail and choose mid-sized headsails. But in the final half hour build-up to the 1500 start, sail changes were swiftly made to ensure the yachts were fully powered up as the winds eased.

Amongst a bay full of spectator craft, crammed with supporters and well-wishers, the Perseverance team powered across the Start Line first, still mid head sail hoist, just ahead of PSP Logistics with Our Isles and Oceans hot on its heels. On the opposite end of the start area, Washington, DC, flew in from fourth across the line, to challenge the frontrunners as they headed south through the Firth of Lorn.

There were some exciting close passes as Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam and Zhuhai, along with UNICEF and Yacht Club Punta del Este, tacked in front of each other in a zig-zag head-to-head battle, in the early stages of this 920 nautical mile race back to Portsmouth.

Lone figures could be seen on every bow, calling sail trim to teammates in cockpits, poised ready to grind winches or ease sheets in order to eek out every knot of boat speed possible. This may be one of shortest races of the 40,000nm circumnavigation, and while the overall race podium positions will be decided, the look on every crew member’s face said they were going all out to achieve that final race win.
